Walk into any store or scroll any marketplace and you will find bedsheets at every price. Many of the cheapest are polyester or polycotton, a blend of polyester and cotton. They look fine in the packet, but the fabric your sheets are made of has a big effect on how well you sleep, how your skin feels and how long your bedding lasts. Here is how the three compare, and why we only make our bedding in pure cotton.
What is the difference?
- Cotton is a natural fibre from the cotton plant. It is soft, breathable and absorbent.
- Polyester is a synthetic fibre made from petroleum. It is essentially a plastic, spun into thread.
- Polycotton is a blend of the two, often 50/50 or 65/35. It sits somewhere in the middle, but carries many of polyester's drawbacks.
1. Cotton breathes, polyester traps heat
Your body releases heat and moisture all night. Cotton fibres absorb that moisture and let air pass through the fabric, so your bed stays cool and dry. Polyester barely absorbs water at all, so sweat sits on the surface and heat gets trapped between you and the sheet. That is why polyester sheets often feel clammy and sticky, especially in hot and humid Indian weather. Polycotton is better than pure polyester, but the more polyester in the blend, the warmer and stuffier it sleeps.
2. Cotton is kinder to your skin
Cotton is soft, natural and rarely irritating, which is why it is the go-to fabric for babies, hospitals and anyone with sensitive skin. Synthetic fabrics can hold sweat against the skin and build up static, which some people find itchy or uncomfortable. If you or anyone in your family has sensitive skin or allergies, pure cotton is the safer choice.
3. Cotton gets softer, polyester pills
Good cotton gets softer with every wash. Polyester and polycotton tend to go the other way: the synthetic fibres rub together and form tiny bobbles, called pills, that make sheets feel rough and look old within months. Cotton made with combed yarn, which has the short, weak fibres removed, resists pilling even better and stays smooth for years.
4. Cotton stays fresher
Polyester attracts and holds on to body oils, which means odours can cling to the fabric even after washing. Cotton releases dirt and oils more easily in the wash, so your sheets smell fresh for longer.
5. Cotton is better for the planet
Every time synthetic fabric is washed, it sheds tiny plastic fibres, known as microplastics, that end up in rivers and oceans. Cotton is a natural fibre that breaks down at the end of its life. Choosing certified cotton, such as fabric certified to OEKO-TEX, GOTS or OCS standards, also means the fabric has been tested for harmful substances and, where relevant, made with organic cotton.
So why do people buy polyester?
To be fair, polyester and polycotton do have some advantages. They are cheaper, they wrinkle less and they dry faster. That makes them popular for budget hotels, hostels and quick-turnaround laundry. But for your own bed, where you spend around a third of your life, comfort and breathability matter far more than a few minutes saved on ironing. And because good cotton lasts much longer, it often works out better value over the years.

Tips for spotting real cotton
- Read the label carefully. "Cotton rich" or "cotton feel" usually means a polyester blend.
- Look for 100% cotton and, ideally, combed yarn.
- Check for fabric certifications like OEKO-TEX, GOTS or OCS.
- Be wary of very high thread counts at very low prices. They are often made with thin, low quality threads or synthetic blends.
